They were hard to come by, inconvenient, and unreliable, while also not providing enough volume amplification to really do the job. These systems were also often huge and expensive, which made them not feasible for most musicians to own and use. Thanks to these inventions, PA systems could be plugged into a wall socket, which enabled them to be much smaller and overall better than the previous battery-based systems. Beauchamp and Rickenbacker, the innovators mentioned in our blog about electric guitars, began to experiment with modifying these; they altered the system to work with a pickup instead of a microphone, much like modern amps.
This design would prove to be crucial to the development of amps. Beauchamp and Rickenbacke would go on to form the Electro String company, and would create the first production-model dedicated electric guitar amplifier in After creating this model, the company hired an engineer, Ralph Robertson, to improve their amplifier design. Robertson would go on to develop new circuitry that would put Electro String amps far above all other competition, to the point where their amps would inspire the designs of others.
This amp design made guitar amplifiers much more popular, and they would steadily rise in popularity over the years. By summer , the Deluxe was upgraded to the new tweed-covered TV-front style, along with a larger speaker, revamped circuitry and other features. Fender seems to have built substantially more of the Deluxe woodie models than the other two woodie amps, whereas woodie Princetons and Professionals are now much more rare and, accordingly, expensive. The woodie Professional had six tubes and the most intricate circuitry of any of the three woodie amps although, again, no circuit board.
The woodie Professional also appears to have been upgraded to the tweed-covered TV-front style earlier than the Princeton and Deluxe woodie models; this took place circa mid In the modern era, Fender has occasionally paid tribute to the original woodie amps by issuing replica models that completely or in part mirror the basic design and stylish vibe of the originals.
Skip to main content. The cable connecting the pickup to the amp was fitted with four-prong connectors at either end to ensure no other pickup would ever feel the plus volts necessary for operation. The different styles of connectors at each end did insure that no one accidently plugged the high voltage of one Volu-Tone amp into the high voltage or the inputs of another.
Do not permit plug to remain inserted in this jack for longer than two seconds. A 6C8 preamp tube and an 80 rectifier complete the tube complement, although an extra tube socket was plugged, suggesting the previous model had a second power tube. The cabinet is covered in a spiffy three-tone tweed with a leather handle and a Volu-Tone logo cut from wood as a speaker protector.
The pair can be seen on page of American Guitars note: ignore the date. The revised guitar was probably about as loud acoustically as through the amp which put out less than 10 watts , making it another commercial flop.
Gibson ca. These were never made available or promoted to the public. The builder is currently unknown, though probably from Chicago and almost certainly not Gibson. It would be interesting to know if these amps were made specifically for Gibson, or if they were already on the market for use as portable PA systems. Postscript By the start of , things were about ready to take off in the electric guitar market.
