Jackson won gold at the 60 kg level in Seoul in and followed that with gold at 71kg in Barcelona in , moving up again to 78kg in Atlanta and now to 81kg in Sydney. In he received an MBE for his services to judo. During this time he has struck up a friendship with Rose, who was inspired to fight by Jackson's example.

Both are 28, with Jackson in the B2 class while Rose is in the less visually impaired B3 class and comes in at the 90kg weight. Jackson generously describes Rose, who won bronze in Atlanta, as the more gifted technically but there is little doubt who is the dominant player in the British squad. Unlike Rose, who is married with a two-year-old daughter, Jackson is determined to stay single while his quest for greater glory continues. Jackson, whose fiercely competitive nature found an outlet in judo in early schooldays after his sight problem meant he could not play ball games, looks to be the Paralympian equivalent of Steve Redgrave.

A gold in Sydney and again in Athens, when he will be 32, would take him to the Redgrave mark. Only one thing can stop him from adding a fourth gold and that is an unknown contender coming through as he did at 16 in Seoul, the first games where the same city hosted both the Olympics and Paralympics. Jackson recalls: "Everyone wanted to fight me then. I was by far the youngest. To them I was just a little boy. At the age of 15 he competed in his first European Championship in Paris where he won the first of 16 European gold medals.

His paralympic medal was won at just 16 - and three world championship gold medals made him Great Britain's most successful judo player of all time. Jackson told the court he had been a valued member of society and wanted to rebuild his life. He received the MBE for his services to the sport in but following an injury, he retired from judo in only to take up indoor tandem cycling and in the Paralympic World Cup he won two silver medals.

Prosecuting Paul Darnborough said the fraud offences occurred between September and July after Jackson claimed access to work support. Jackson told the court he was fighting to keep his job at the school in Rochdale and still wanted to teach judo to children. He was driven to work by his wife and rendering false receipts from the taxi company. He initially insisted he had been collected every day by the same taxi driver but later confessed after he was confronted with the fact there was no record of his bookings at the cab firm.

Jackson was ordered to complete a four month community order and abide by a 7pm to 6am curfew. The curfew will be relaxed every Tuesday to start at 10pm so he can carry on teaching judo to youngsters.

Passing sentence JP Stephen Ingram told Jackson: 'You should be an example to your pupils and to all those around you. You are a role model to young people.
